Is it a Veil or a Reveal?
This double-walled head sculpture confronts my own identity and traditions as a Korean woman. The piece symbolizes an inner, reticulated mind where layered images remain blurred. The sculpture’s outer layer features a traditional Chilbo pattern, with intricate motifs representing values of auspiciousness, rarity, and preciousness, while the inner layer remains hidden beneath. Each face is hand-carved, and though the outer pattern hints at what lies beneath, the strong imagery makes both faces difficult to discern. This work reflects how we often view others through a lens of prejudice, influenced by attributes like skin color, nationality, and culture, ultimately obscuring their true identity.
