Parallel Figures: A Solo Exhibition by DeepPond Kim

Photographed by Roman Dean

Parallel Figures presents DeepPond Kim's sculptural series Disorder, where clay becomes a medium to explore human form, identity, and societal norms. Drawing from her immigrant experience and Korean heritage, she uses traditional Onggi jar-making techniques to craft fragmented bodies reflecting the complexities of contemporary life. Her work addresses themes of displacement, body modification, and the fluctuating acceptance of diversity.

In Disorder, DeepPond reimagines the human body through a realist-surrealist lens, disrupting symmetrical forms to challenge societal ideals of perfection. Her raw, unfired sculptures are dissected and reassembled, revealing human vulnerability and inviting viewers to confront their discomfort with difference.

By blurring the line between reality and fiction, her work evokes subtle feelings of anxiety and uncertainty, reflecting the tension between "perfect" societal structures and "imperfect" values. DeepPond's sculptures symbolize transformation and adaptation, encouraging viewers to reflect on diversity and embrace the beauty of difference.

Through Parallel Figures, DeepPond challenges societal norms and offers her interpretation of a 'perfect' body—one that transcends conventional beauty standards.
